The New England Patriots have finally brought their protracted negotiations with star cornerback Christian Gonzalez to an end, signing him to a four-year contract worth $135 million. Gonzalez's contract, which includes $102 million in guaranteed money, makes him the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history.
Gonzalez has gone from a No. 17 overall pick to an elite player after just a handful of seasons, which is not often the path that some highly selected Patriots players have followed during the last decade or more. Gonzalez's extension puts him in very rarefied air among Patriots stars.
Gonzalez became the first Patriots first-round selection to sign a second contract with the team since Dont'a Hightower eleven years ago. While Gonzalez alone doesn't make up for a decade of largely poor drafting, he appears to have put a stop to New England's vicious cycle of swapping a bunch of non-NFL players in and out.

While the Patriots didn't have a first-rounder in four of the past 11 drafts due to trades, they've still been fairly slim pickings when they have made a selection. Malcom Brown was a solid starting defensive tackle for four seasons before bouncing around with the Jaguars and Saints, and he was the best pick made in that stretch.
Defensive tackle Domonique Easley (2014) and wide receiver N'Keal Harry (2019) simply were not NFL players; both offensive tackle Isaiah Wynn and running back Sony Michel (2018) struggled with injuries, and Mac Jones (2021) proved not to be the franchise quarterback Drake Maye is.
The less is said about offensive lineman Cole Strange (2022), the better.

In just three seasons, Gonzalez's aggressive man coverage has helped him earn Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro nods. Even though Gonzalez wasn't as sharp in 2025 as he was the prior year, his splendid performance against Offensive Player of the Year Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the Super Bowl affirmed that he is one of the best at what he does in the game.
After getting a gift from on high when Gonzalez fell to them in 2023, the Patriots followed that up with a tremendous quarterback in Maye.
Even though Will Campbell is in the doghouse for his playoff struggles, he was a quality tackle for most of his rookie season at left tackle. Caleb Lomu has promise, even if he is more of a developmental player.
Bill Belichick gets plenty of well-earned criticism for how he drafted in his final seasons, but he left the Patriots with one final parting gift by adding Gonzalez while still trading down. Gonzalez and Maye are poised to be the Patriots' anchors on both sides of the ball, giving them a very high floor for the future.
