The New England Patriots have been dragged through the mud over the past few weeks, rightfully so, for their lack of urgency in getting a contract extension done for Pro Bowl cornerback and rising superstar Christian Gonzalez.
Based on reports over the past few days, it looked like he was going to play the season opener against the Seahawks without a new deal. In fact, he got on the plane Tuesday afternoon, which officially sent fans into a tailspin, assuming the worst-case scenario had happened.
But in typical Patriots fashion, they waited until the very last second (literally) to finally reach an agreement to make Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, awarding him a 4-year, $135 million contract with $102 million guaranteed.
It's exactly what Gonzalez has earned, and it puts a major distraction to rest. It's a situation that could have easily gotten out of hand the longer it went on, but the right move was finally made, and the Patriots can start the 2026 season without it lingering all year.

It has been a long time since the Patriots have had a player of Gonzalez's caliber, so it didn't make much sense that they were struggling to reach an extension.
It seemed very cut and dry: he lived up to and exceeded all expectations since Bill Belichick used what would be his final first-round pick as the Patriots' head coach and unofficial general manager in 2023 on the cornerback, and has quickly risen the ranks across the league to become one of the best at the position at just 24 years old.
Instead, the higher-ups in Foxboro failed to get a deal done in the spring, when most believed they would, and brought it all the way to the final second before they were set for the Super Bowl rematch against the Seahawks on Wednesday night.
At least now they can put this away and be done with it, shifting the focus back to the game without worrying about whether Gonzalez will take the field.
Not to mention, finally getting this done sends a good message ahead of extension talks with Drake Maye next offseason.
