When Mike Vrabel was hired as the Patriots' head coach in early 2025, it was expected that he would revamp the roster and bring in the kind of players he likes.

For the most part, since starting his coaching career, Vrabel has favored aggressive, violent, and disruptive players, particularly on defense, and that preference has become more pronounced over the past two years, with a few players in particular becoming the face of that movement.

It's fair to say one of the more notable names on that list is linebacker Christian Elliss, whom Bill Belichick signed in what would be his final season in New England. He has remained with the team since, with the Patriots matching an offer sheet Elliss received from the Raiders during the 2025 offseason.

Based on his performance, he was then given a 2-year contract earlier this year, keeping him on the roster through the 2027 season, and he continues to prove that decision was the right move for this defense.

Elliss's energy has also started to fuel his teammates this season, with rookie Gabe Jacas and Elijah Ponder registering their own big hits over the first seven weeks. That kind of energy sets the Patriots' defense apart and further proves how valuable Elliss has become in a short time.

His production has been consistent, and he is starting to set career highs this season, most recently against the Bears in Week 7.

With another 10+ tackle performance, Elliss recorded his third double-digit tackle game of the season against the Bears last Thursday night. He recorded his second against the Steelers in Week 2 earlier this season, when he totaled 12.

His play in that matchup was notable, and his big hit on quarterback Aaron Rodgers went viral for a few reasons, mostly because he took down the future Hall of Famer so hard that it forced a fumble and a loss of nearly 40 yards.

Heading into their Week 8 matchup with the Dolphins, Elliss is already on pace for the best season of his career, with 51 combined tackles, 2 for loss, 5 quarterback hits, 1 pass defended, 1 forced fumble, and 1 sack.

Much of that is half of what he accomplished in 15 games last season, and we're only 7 games in this year.

If he can keep that momentum going, there's no reason to doubt he won't have the most impressive season of his career and further cement himself as an integral part of their defensive identity. Any concerns about whether they should've extended him this offseason have been, and will continue to be, put to rest, and he still has plenty of opportunities to be even better than we've seen so far.

At just 27, Elliss can be relied on as a cornerstone of what they're trying to build defensively, and with consistent play moving forward, he could become an underrated addition the Patriots should get much more credit for.
