Christian Barmore knows better than anyone that expectations don't always match up with reality. After all, the talented defensive tackle went from a dominant force to missing most of the 2024 season with blood clots to delivering a solid-but-unspectacular campaign that didn't quite match his hefty salary.
Entering his fifth year in Foxboro, the former second-round pick faces more pressure than ever to justify the $84 million contract extension he signed after the 2023 season. Only three players have a bigger cap hit than Barmore, who's coming off a year in which he recorded only 29 tackles and 2 sacks.
Of course, the New England Patriots face sky-high expectations of their own following an improbable run to the Super Bowl in Mike Vrabel's first year at the helm. And if they plan on avenging their loss to the Seattle Seahawks, they'll need familiar faces (and a few new ones) to step up on Barmore's side of the ball.
Luckily for Patriot Nation, it sure sounds like there's no shortage of confidence from the players' perspective, despite the fact that the defense will look quite different in 2026.
Christian Barmore sees big things ahead for the Patriots defense
Although the Patriots finished fourth in points allowed last season, they didn't exactly dominate up front. At least, not when it came to putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
The lackluster pass-rush production led to somewhat of an overhaul up front this offseason. The Patriots let K'Lavon Chaisson—their most consistent, impactful edge rusher—walk in free agency, opting to sign Dre'Mont Jones instead.
They also used a second-round pick on Gabe Jacas, a powerful outside linebacker who hasn't exactly gotten off to a scorching start since hearing his name called on Day 2 of the draft.
With a few new faces expected to contribute along the front seven, it's clear there's reason for optimism about what lies ahead for a unit to be led by Zak Kuhr, who was officially named defensive coordinator this offseason.
"Special group of guys. We’ve got some new cats here, some new guys. They’ve already caught up,” Barmore said in June minicamp. “We’ve got some ‘dawgs’ out here, I feel like they respond to our energy. All of us, even the vets, we all have the same goal."
Yes, we’re in the heat of workout video season and I’m here for it.

We need a motivated Christian Barmore. Set the tone up front. DL is one of the strongest rooms.

Obviously, the outspoken defensive lineman sees big-time potential from a group that features players at various stages of their careers. On one hand, you have a seasoned pro like defensive end Harold Landry trying to win a ring before he calls it a career.
You also have several in-their-prime veterans like Barmore, Jones, defensive tackle Milton Williams, and linebacker Robert Spillane, who should be pillars of the defense. Plus, you have younger guys like Jacas and second-year pros Elijah Ponder and Bradyn Swinson vying for playing time.
That's an eclectic mix of proven production and untapped upside. So, how can that group stay on course?
“Stay composed. Stay committed. We all come here to go to war together," Barmore said. "I feel like every year, we just have to keep working hard to be the best we can be so we can do the things we did last year, even better.”
Don't sleep on the secondary, either
It's easy to forget that the Patriots actually have more talent (and maybe even better depth) on the back end of their defense. Headlined by soon-to-be-paid superstar Christian Gonzalez, their stacked secondary also includes fellow cornerbacks Carlton Davis and Marcus Jones, as well as second-year safety Craig Woodson, who looked quite comfortable as a full-time starter during his rookie season.
Don't be surprised if the 2025 fourth-rounder makes a substantial second-year leap, given he'll be playing next to veteran Kevin Byard.
The league's reigning interceptions leader reunited with Vrabel in an effort to win a Super Bowl ring before he and former Tennessee Titans teammate Harold Landry finally hang 'em up for good.

While injuries will undoubtedly factor in at some point, there's no doubt the Patriots have one of the most well-rounded defenses in all of football. If Barmore and Williams wreak havoc along the interior, that should free up Landry, Jones, Ponder, and potentially Jacas to get more one-on-one rush opportunities.
Meanwhile, an improved pass rush will only give a sharp, experienced secondary more chances to make plays on the ball. That's one area where both Gonzalez and Davis can improve, especially considering the Patriots are probably about to make Gonzalez the highest-paid corner in league history.
So, if Christian Barmore can rediscover his 2023 form and form a dominant duo with Milton Williams, that could unlock another level of production from one of the league's most talented secondaries, too.
