Among the most unexpected developments of the Patriots' offseason has been the confusing situation surrounding rookie pass rusher Gabe Jacas, whom the team traded up to select in the second round. He was projected to be an immediate help in a weak area of the roster, but he hasn't been around Foxboro much at all over the past few months.
Jacas attended rookie mini camp, but beyond that, he has been MIA. There has been a lot of speculation about why that is, with some reports claiming he had an offseason clean-up surgery on his knee, while others suggest it's an issue with his contract and that's why he remains unsigned.
Going into July, he is the only second-round pick left unsigned in the league, and we are no closer to figuring out what is keeping him away from the Patriots. Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf haven't provided much clarity, and instead, Jacas has taken to social media to show what he's been up to.
It would be fair to say that he is sending a message to the team and maybe even the fans with videos of his training, and his latest post was a clear statement to end the lingering concerns about his health.
Gabe Jacas resurfaces on social media and presumably addresses concerns about his injury
In the latest video Jacas has shared, he is working out, specifically squatting a lot of weight, which sends an unmistakable message that he is having no issues with the knee he allegedly had surgery on a few months ago.
Any and all concerns about whether he would be ready for training camp seem to be put to rest now, but that doesn't mean he's any closer to signing his rookie contract, which is also a big problem.

Training camp is quickly approaching…

This is still a positive sign of what might be coming, with training camp just a few weeks away, and Jacas appears ready to go.
We won't know definitively, of course, until training camp begins, and although that's certainly something to want updates for, there is plenty of reason to be more concerned about his contract status instead.
That appears to be a bigger question mark with no end in sight. The Patriots haven't revealed any updates over the past several weeks, and we probably won't hear anything until training camp begins. The hope, of course, is that it won't take long to get a deal done, but given how the offseason has progressed, it's difficult to be optimistic.
It would be wiser for the team and Jacas to sign a contract sooner rather than later, particularly since the rookie hasn't trained with the team nearly at all ahead of his first season.
The defense needs him on the field in Week 1, if possible, and the pass rush will almost certainly suffer if he can't go due to his injury or contract status.
Getting this put to bed will need to be a major priority for the higher-ups in Foxboro, and because it is such a crucial matter to handle, they should address it as soon as possible, if not before training camp begins.
It looks like Jacas' knee shouldn't be an issue, so there's no reason that his contract should become the newest problem instead.
