It's another week in the NFL, and Cam Newton is continuing to diminish what the Patriots and Drake Maye have accomplished this season for what feels like nothing more than having clips go viral. Unfortunately, that means Patriots fans are back to defending their 23-year-old quarterback against the most ridiculous talking points, and the former MVP is at the top of the list.
As if his takes haven't been disrespectful enough, Newton took his Maye criticism to a new low after seeing him lead his team to the Super Bowl, a run for which he doesn't want to give the second-year quarterback much credit or praise.
He discussed New England's playoff run and their win over the Broncos in the AFC Championship in a new episode of his "4th and 1" podcast earlier this week, and although he attempted to applaud Maye for how much success he's had in his young career, he claimed he had nothing to do with the Patriots getting to the Super Bowl.
In fact, he essentially said they're in the playoffs despite him, focusing on Maye's mostly unexciting performance over the last three games.

At this point, there might not be a reason to defend Maye anymore against the things that Newton continues to say. But it's the fact that he keeps going after him for no reason that is becoming odd and enraging Patriots fans.
Cam Newton won't stop discrediting Drake Maye for his success in 2025
The narratives coming out of the AFC Championship game about Maye's postseason performances have gotten out of hand. While it's fair to state he didn't play the best football against the Broncos or in the other two games, he did exactly what he needed to do to get the Patriots a win, which is why they're now in the Super Bowl.
There's a reason they were in that position to begin with, and it has a lot to do with how Maye performed throughout the regular season, helping lead his team to 14 wins after back-to-back seasons that ended with a 4-13 record.
He went into 2025 with a new head coach and staff, an entirely overhauled roster, and still played at a high level that put him firmly in the MVP conversation alongside 17-year veteran Matthew Stafford.
That cannot be overlooked simply because he didn't throw for 300+ yards and four touchdowns in each playoff game, especially since he faced three of the top-5 defenses in the league on his way to the Super Bowl.
But for some reason, people like Newton cannot move on from that and want to keep firing up that talking point in the days leading to the Championship game in an effort to discredit the young quarterback some more.
Why Newton continues to harp on Maye, who has stated numerous times that he grew up a huge Panthers fan and idolized him, is starting to become questionable. Fortunately, the Patriots are good at tuning out the noise, and Maye won't have to worry about what's being said because those who are the most important recognize just how good and valuable he really is.
