Just a few weeks ahead of training camp, it's clear what lingering weaknesses the Patriots roster still has and should address before the start of the regular season. Sure, things can change over the next two months, but on paper, it's hard to overlook what might become a problem during a very difficult year.

Perhaps the most dire of all remains the pass rush, especially with second-round pick Gabe Jacas not participating in any offseason training activities after rookie minicamp. Because his status remains unclear and Harold Landry III is recovering from offseason surgery, there are understandable doubts about the defensive line.

Fortunately, we have heard positive feedback about newcomer Dre'Mont Jones, who was signed to replace K'Lavon Chaisson, as well as a few under-the-radar performers in Elijah Ponder and Bradyn Swinson.

The problem is that the group is not instilling any fear in Patriots' upcoming opponents, and we're already seeing fans of rival teams, like the Bills, talking about exploiting this weakness this upcoming season.

That's not a good sign for the Patriots' roster, and it should be a loud message to the staff that more additions might be made before Week 1.

The Patriots roster is already being overlooked in one area that could determine their 2026 success

Going into the offseason, there weren't many players headed to free agency who, if they left, would make a significant impact on the roster. The one exception was Chaisson, who outperformed his one-year contract and had the best season of his career in 2025, which ultimately led to a nice contract with the Commanders earlier this year.

Because he was one of the most productive pass rushers for the defense last season, most Patriots fans hoped he would be re-signed and become an integral part of the defense, so when he signed elsewhere, it was clear that the group was going to need more help than initially believed.

It led to signing Jones, who has veteran experience but is very much in the same boat as Chaisson was last offseason, as he hasn't managed to be overly impressive thus far in his career.

From early reports regarding how he's looked at practice, however, Jones is fitting the part and might be a surprisingly good signing when it matters most.

Regardless, that requires time, and Bills fans are already dismissing what the group could eventually look like and are urging the team to take advantage of every minor weakness the Patriots roster has, and based on how close the games were between them last year, it's clear they'll need all the help they can get to take home the win.
