The unnecessarily drawn-out negotiations over Christian Gonzalez's contract extension are unfortunately continuing, as the Patriots prepare for their second preseason game against the Eagles this upcoming weekend.
It is a situation that could have, and should have, been very easily avoided, since the cornerback has been a superstar since Bill Belichick drafted him in the first round in 2023, and he has proven beyond any doubt that he can be the anchor of their secondary for years to come. That would presumably make it easy to pay him the big bucks to keep him around.
Yet the apparent lack of urgency from the higher-ups in Foxboro has now backed them into a corner, as the news about Devon Witherspoon, a fellow first-round pick from the same class, reached a deal for his extension over the weekend, officially giving him a $33 million-a-year salary.
That was always the risk they were taking by putting off getting a deal done, and now they're on the hook to give Gonzalez even more, which was just confirmed by NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
The Patriots made their situation with Christian Gonzalez much worse
While speaking to the hosts of Good Morning Football on Monday morning, Rapoport shared the latest update on the Gonzalez-Patriots standoff, as limited as it might be, while also emphasizing that they're now looking at awarding him the highest salary by a cornerback in NFL history.
If they were being stingy about money before Witherspoon's deal, they're certainly not going to like this now.

Although there haven't been reports suggesting that Gonzalez has explicitly stated or that there were any rumblings that he was looking to be the highest-paid cornerback from his extension, now that Witherspoon, who shares the same agent, has earned that title, it's fair to assume that the Patriot will want to top that.
All things considered, Gonzalez has played better than Witherspoon and has certainly earned the right to be the highest-paid at the position. The problem has always been the Patriots' willingness to make that happen, and history suggests they won't be all that eager.
Throughout Belichick's tenure, he took the brunt of criticism for being cheap with players' contracts, especially with Tom Brady, but Robert Kraft was the owner and the one holding the purse strings.
So there's a good chance he's not all that thrilled to open his wallet and pay players the massive contracts they demand and/or deserve, including Gonzalez.
The hope is that because Mike Vrabel has already reached the pinnacle of success in just one season, or at least one step below the peak, Kraft will be a bit more willing to pay Gonzalez what he's looking for.
The Patriots' owner has already stated that they offered him a contract that would make him the highest-paid, but that might not be true after Witherspoon's contract, and the rest of the contract is presumably not up to par.
Regardless, this needs to be figured out sooner rather than later because this defense won't be nearly as successful without Gonzalez on the field.
