The resurgent New England Patriots, after a disappointing 1-2 start in 2026, are riding a wave that has carried them to three straight wins and landed them in second place in the AFC East. Drake Maye has led the charge.

He's thrown 10 touchdown passes and only one interception in his last three games. He achieved those marks largely without his top receiver, A.J. Brown, contributing at all.

While some media outlets were naively writing off Maye after his rough start to the season, he's rebounded like Celtics all-time great Bill Russell and, with his passing and running, propelled the team to a 4-2 record.

Now, with No. 1 receiver Brown back, the Patriots offense is ready to take off the training wheels and intensify their challenge to the Bills for the top spot in the AFC East, if they can get some creative play-calling for a change. Brown is a massive difference-maker.

Karen Guregian of MassLive has speculated on how much Brown's addition could mean for the Patriots going forward, even after his disappointing return to action against the Jets. With Brown back on track, he'll take the Maye-led offense to a whole new level.

A.J. Brown will be a massive difference-maker for the Patriots

Brown's rough performance against the Jets, in which he dropped two perfect throws and missed a catchable long gain, was clearly an aberration. That rusty play came from being on the shelf with an injury for a month. There's no doubt that a now-healthy Brown will return to fuel an even more explosive offense alongside Maye, now that he's fully back in action.

Guregian commented on the potential positive impact Brown's return could have going forward.

"Given the rash of injuries on offense at those positions, with Brown topping the list, it’s made it harder to get over that hurdle. But with him being activated off IR, a clearer picture should develop over the next few weeks, and beyond...The Patriots recognized they needed at least one playmaking receiver who would dictate coverage. Brown fits the mold... there will be plenty of other tests down the road going up against the defenses of Minnesota, Kansas City and Denver.

Brown should be back up to speed, or as good as he can be coming off that injury...The return of Brown, however...will be the best barometer as to how good the offense can be, how well they’ll be able to deal with elite defenses."

Brown is now ready to take up the challenge of leading the Patriots receiving corps, as expected. The losses of Romeo Doubs, the team's No. 2 receiver, and Mack Hollins are detrimental, but as expected, the receiver room has unappreciated depth behind them.

It seems the offensive coaching staff has finally discovered that Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III only needed playing time and targets to make an impact. When they get playing time, they perform, and excel. If Williams and Chism keep getting snaps, they are ready to step into the void left by Doubs and Hollins and make plays.

Additionally, Pop Douglas, a solid slot receiver, has been a huge asset to Maye. Those factors, plus Brown's readiness to explode onto the Patriots' scene as expected before his unfortunate Week 1 injury, have the receiver room poised to challenge any NFL defense.

If the patchwork offensive line can give Maye clean pockets to work his magic, the offense's future looks bright. If rookie tackle Caleb Lomu remains a starter and Brown, as expected, draws significant coverage from NFL defenses, expect Maye and the Patriots' offense to keep up the pace toward another AFC East title run.

A healthy A.J. Brown will deliver exactly what was expected: a lot of catches, big plays, and, most importantly, wins.
