On the Rich Eisen Show, Patriots’ insider Tom Curran gave some insight on the Patriots’ QB situation and perhaps Robert Kraft is pulling the strings.  He joined the show on Wednesday and seemed to strongly indicate that the Patriots will not be in the QB market this offseason.

This obvious comes as Mac Jones regressed a bit in year two and it was clear that the Patriots’ offense was the weak link of the team.  Seeing as the QB market could be quite active this offseason, it’d make sense if the Patriots were to sniff around, right?  Well, Pats’ insider Tom Curran vehemently ruled that out this offseason, going as far as to say:

"“That would happen over Robert Kraft’s dead body."

It’s clear that according to Curran, at least, Robert Kraft won’t let that type of move happen… yet.

Curran did note that the situation could perhaps be different in 2024 and if Jones does play poorly again, the Patriots could be in the QB market.  Curran noted his small salary and what had happened with the play-calling in 2022.

This might come as a surprise to some, but others might be a bit shocked.  It is clear that Jones is a low-ceiling QB.  He doesn’t possess “elite” qualities but does appear to be above average in accuracy and intelligence.

So as we go into the 2023 season, I’d now expect Robert Kraft to at some point come out and vouch for Jones, and on the football side, it’s clear what the team needs.  They need two new tackles and an elite pass catcher.

They have decent draft capital to be able to do this, and they also may benefit in adding an older veteran quarterback who is perhaps more capable that Brian Hoyer.  Jones and Zappe could function as the QB1/2, but a QB who can perhaps raise the floor of the room would be a smart move, especially if Jones falters in 2023.

Robert Kraft seems to not like the idea of the team moving on from Mac Jones, and honestly, that should not come as a surprise.
