Former Patriots that failed with their new teams in 2022

J.C. Jackson – CB

2021 stats w/Patriots: 17 games – 58 combined tackles, 23 passes defended, 1 FF, 8 interceptions returned for 92 yards, TD, 52.4 passer rating allowed

2022 stats w/Chargers: 5 games – 15 combined tackles, 2 passes defended

The most difficult player to see leave the Patriots last season was certainly Jackson. After Stephon Gilmore had been traded mid-season, Jackson was the glimmer of hope for New England in the cornerback room. His performance in the former DPOY’s absence certainly earned him a massive contract, which he received from the Chargers, totaling five years and $82.5 million.

His time in Los Angeles started roughly as he was dealing with an ankle injury that required surgery, making him miss most of the preseason and the first game of the year. He went on to play in a total of five games but noticeably struggled with his new team. Jackson’s adjustment to his new role created uneasiness for the Chargers’ defense and even led to his benching in their week six game against the Broncos.

The following week, Jackson suffered a season-ending injury against the Seahawks when he ruptured the patellar tendon in his right knee.

Considering his incredible season in his last year with the Patriots, his performance in L.A. was starkly different. However, knowing the talent he does possess from watching him in New England for four years, if he can get the hang of how the Chargers use their secondary, he could quickly get back to the top of the cornerback board in no time.
