New England Patriots’ wide receiver Jakobi Meyers made a game-losing mistake yesterday, but should still be re-signed by the team.  On the final play of regulation, when the team should have simply taken a knee to play for overtime, Rhamondre Stevenson took a handoff up the middle, lateraled it to Jakobi Meyers, who then tossed it backwards in the direction of Mac Jones.

It was plucked out of the air by former Patriot Chandler Jones who ran it back for the game-winning score.  There was plenty blame to go around on this final play.  Matt Patricia deserves some blame for calling that play.  Rhamondre Stevenson deserves some blame for not going down and throwing the lateral to Meyers.

Meyers also deserves some blame for throwing a wild lateral backwards.  Any teammate would say that a loss falls on the team and not one person.  That’s just how it goes in professional sports.  The quarterbacks may blame themselves, the coaches may blame themselves, and the rest of the team may place blame on the entire roster itself.

However, the reason for that loss in regulation was because of Jakobi Meyers, but his value to the team is very clear.  Even because of this one hiccup, the Patriots should be prepared to re-sign him this coming offseason.

He’s produced in every year he’s been with the team.  Currently, he has a career high total in yards per game, and has second highest totals in receptions per game and catch percentage.  He also has a career high three touchdowns.

He’s not someone who fills up a stat sheet, but the team has yet to find a true difference maker on offense.  Until then, they need to retain players of value within this unit.  Jakobi Meyers is the best and most consistent player for the Patriots, and one mistake should not cloud that.
