The New England Patriots are through five training camp practices. What went on today at practice, and what other news is there to update on?

The pads have come on at Patriots training camp, as the team wrapped up their fifth day, and first with pads.  It was another up and down practice it seems, with winners and losers on both sides of the ball.

In doing some digging, the defensive lined seemed to have a good day, with both recently extended Davon Godchaux and Christian Barmore have very strong 1 vs. 1 reps.

That duo is set to explode in their second year together, and I think we will see a much more effective Patriots’ front, especially with Matt Judon rushing off the edge.

Mac Jones connected on a couple deep passes as well, one of which was to rookie Tyquan Thornton, who received quite a few first-team reps.

Yet again, perhaps the darling of the practices so far, DeVante Parker was making more noise with a couple long catches as well.  DeVante Parker might end up being one of the MVPs of the team this year if his training camp performances translate into games.

Monday also saw the return of a few players, namely Jabril Peppers, Jonathan Jones, and Myles Bryant, who all came off the PUP/NFI list.

Other players who are still sidelined include Brian Hoyer, Deatrich Wise, James White, Chasen Hines, and Andrew Stueber.

Lastly, Jake Bailey, the team’s punter, inked a new deal.  The fourth year man signed a four year extension worth $13.5 million, which includes $6.5 million guaranteed.  Bailey is one of the best punters in the league, so this extension was clearly a no-brainer.

Training camp continues with the team heading back out to practices on Tuesday morning, at the normal 9:30am start time.

All in all, the Patriots have seen some excellent practices from many players, but I’m sure if you asked Bill Belichick, he would find a laundry list of things that have gone wrong.
