Did the New England Patriots overpay for veteran DT Davon Godchaux?
New England Patriots HC Bill Belichick shows praise to veteran DT Davon Godchaux. Pats sign Godchaux to a two-year deal for $20.8 million.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the New England Patriots have extended veteran DT Davon Godchaux to a two-year deal. He’s scheduled to make $20.8 million with $17.85 million fully guaranteed. Many were surprised by the choice of extending Godchaux, however, Patriots HC Bill Belichick has nothing but praise for the guy. In fact, prior to chatting with the media for his daily pre-practice press conference, he shared some words with agent Drew Rosenhaus. Both, seem very happy with the outcome regarding Mr. Godchaux.
"“Patriots’ DT Davon Godchaux has signed a two-year, $20.8 million extension with New England,” Schefter tweeted. “That includes $17.85 million fully guaranteed at signing, per Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha, who negotiated the deal.”"
Belichick’s Praise for Godchaux rejoining the New England Patriots
Prior to the practice, Belichick was asked about Godchaux’s contract fairly quickly in the interview. He was asked if it was worth investing in the 27-year-old DT, however, his answer surprised many.
“Well, he’s one of the best defensive linemen in the league,” Belichick said. “I’m glad we were able to work that out with Davon and Drew and get it done. Obviously, both sides are happy, the contract’s signed.”
In 2021, the LSU product had an underwhelming season. He recorded 65 tackles and one sack appearing in all 17 games of the team’s regular season and including playoff games, per ESPN. He did rank first among all the Patriots’ defensive linemen with 672 snaps. He’s proven to be available, yet has he proven to be productive and effective on the field?
Based on his latest extension, it’s confirmed he’s projected to have another sizable role. It appears Belichick believes in his abilities and his play alongside stud Christian Barmore.
