Former Patriots OC Charlie Weis had a bizarre Tom Brady comparison for one of the team’s supposed draft targets.

Patriots fans that are already mentally drained from the persistent buzz surrounding the quarterback position, guess what? It isn’t going to end anytime soon, so you should probably do whatever it takes to increase your tolerance levels.

Based on recent reports, the Patriots and Cam Newton have mutually agreed to go their separate ways in the offseason, opening the door for them to bring in a new quarterback, whether it be through trade, free agency or the draft.

Taking that into account, you can’t rule out the possibility of the Patriots using their No. 15 overall selection to draft one of the top QB prospects in this year’s pool, which is widely said to feature at least a handful of players who could become solid starters in the NFL.

It goes without saying that Alabama junior Mac Jones falls under that category. We personally love what the future holds for him, but former Patriots offensive coordinator Charlie Weis ridiculously compared him to the franchise’s greatest ever player.

This is precisely why only select individuals are qualified to analyze the draft: because people go around comparing unproven college commodities who have yet to take an NFL snap to some of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game.

Just because Jones and Brady have a similar build and slightly comparable mechanics does NOT in mean the former will achieve a shred of what the latter has accomplished throughout his distinguished career. We see it happen every year, but claims like this one are greatly irresponsible in that they put entirely unnecessary (but monstrous) pressure on a young prospect’s shoulders without knowing if they can handle it or not.

Jones has been nothing short of remarkable for Alabama this season — he ranks no lower than second in the nation in completions, completion percentage, passing yards, touchdowns, yards per completion and passer rating — but this is also his first year as the starter.

Brady, meanwhile, spent two years as the starter at Michigan and came nowhere close being recognized as a touted draft prospect. Why else do you think he was drafted in the sixth round (No. 199 overall) by the Patriots back in 2000?

As far as their respective college trajectories are concerned, we see no similarities between Brady and Jones. In actuality, the only thing they have in common is their body frame and that they started for two of the most storied programs in college football history.

Oh, and the fact that they both might end up in New England.

We obviously have great respect for what Weis accomplished during his tenure with the Patriots, but we’re not so sure what prompted him to make this asinine comparison.
