Patriots wide receiver N’Keal Harry apologized after his trainer was critical of quarterback Cam Newton.

Let’s just call it what it is: the New England Patriots’ passing game has been nothing shy of a disaster this season. However, it would be unfair to point the finger at any singular individual, because the team’s struggles boil down to multiple underlying factors.

You can complain all you want about quarterback Cam Newton’s inconsistency, but it’s virtually impossible to properly evaluate him given the Patriots’ lackluster roster construction on that side of the ball.

Their wide receiving corps has been the epitome of undependable, and the lack of ascension from N’Keal Harry has pretty much served as a microcosm of their ineffectiveness. To make matters worse for the second-year pro, his trainer came out and publicly eviscerated Newton this week, asserting that his lack of production has more to do with suspect quarterback play than him.

Knowing the damaging effect these comments could have on the Patriots’ locker room, Harry was quick to clear the air with Newton, noting that the harsh words didn’t come from him and that his trainer was out of line to do so without his approval.

"“I just let him know and made sure he knew that whatever was said, I don’t know what was said, nothing came from me,” Harry told reporters. “Rischad (Whitfield) hasn’t said anything like that to me. It doesn’t sound to me like that exact statement is something he would say. I don’t know if it was taken out of context or what happened, but I don’t know that conversation never came from me, and it was never anything that I was even aware of until I saw it on social media.”"

Props to Harry for coming out in defense of Newton, who — despite what some members of the media think — in no way deserves to shoulder the majority of the blame for the passing game’s ineptitude in 2020, let alone Harry’s struggles.

Clearly bothered by his trainer’s comments, the 2019 first-round pick took things a step further by highlighting his relationship with Newton, which he had nothing but positive things to say about.

"“He’s been great. He’s really gone out of his way and really made a conscious effort to make sure that he’s doing everything he can to help me. Just kind of mentor me throughout this whole season, and he’s been a huge help to me up to this point.”"

Newton’s had Harry’s back since he first arrived for training camp, and it was encouraging to see him return the favor in the wake of his trainer’s troubling remarks. For the Patriots’ sake, let’s hope this nonsense is swept under the rug before their clash vs Miami this weekend.
