Ted Karras’ quote about joining Dolphins is a shot at Patriots

Former Patriots OL Ted Karras seems to be enjoying his time in Miami.

It’s been regurgitated numerous times throughout 2020 that the New England Patriots underwent a crippling magnitude of roster turnover last offseason.

In terms of the most significant departures, the Patriots have really struggled to replace the production and consistency from the likes of quarterback Tom Brady and linebacking tandem Jamie Collins and Kyle Van Noy, who combined to record 13 sacks and 20 QB hits last season.

However, one player who hasn’t been discussed enough in this regard — probably because the unit hasn’t skipped a beat in his absence — is offensive lineman Ted Karras, who really did an exceptional job filling in at center for David Andrews in 2019.

With that in mind, you would think that Karras would have nothing but positive things to say about his tenure with the Patriots, right? Not exactly. In fact, his comments about signing with Miami almost feel like a direct shot at his former organization.

"“I knew the Dolphins were on the rise,” Karras told reporters on Wednesday. “I knew we were going to have a pretty good team based on the guys that we signed before and we came in and worked hard and put ourselves in a position to play meaningful December games.”"

If that doesn’t qualify as a voluntary dig at New England, then nothing does. Everybody and their mother knew that the Dolphins showed signs of promise in the second half of 2019 and we fully respect Karras’ freedom to choose where he wants to play, but did he really think the Patriots were dead in the water? Especially with the cash we have to play with next offseason, as well as the infrastructure?

We get it: the Dolphins are fighting for their playoff lives and they face a huge matchup vs NE this weekend, so he’s probably all business right now. On top of that, Karras probably would’ve struggled to crack the starting lineup following Andrews’ return from blood clots in his lungs and the unforeseen rise of rookie Michael Onwenu, so we fully understand where he’s coming from.

At the same time, however, it would’ve been nice if he made some positive remarks about the Patriots considering they treated him with nothing but respect over his four-year tenure.

Because of that, we were pretty let down that he chose the alternative route.
