Patriots: Expect a breakout year from Isaiah Wynn for this sole reason

Patriots fans will love offensive lineman Isaiah Wynn’s comments on his health.

Like the rest of the offense, the New England Patriots’ offensive line performed well below their standards last season. Luckily for them, the group will welcome back two key members in center David Andrews and left tackle Isaiah Wynn in 2020.

The former missed the entire season after being hospitalized in late August due to blood clots, whereas the latter was shelved for eight games with a foot injury that he suffered in Week 2 against the Miami Dolphins.

Wynn returned to finish the season and his performance proved why the Patriots selected him in the first round (No. 23 overall) of the 2018 draft. The 23-year-old left tackle understandably wants nothing more than to showcase his talent for a full season, and his media session on Monday left us thinking that he could be poised for a breakout year.

Wynn revealing that he’s no longer rehabbing is the good news we’ve been waiting so long for. As we know, New England’s depth took a massive hit after eight players chose to opt out of the upcoming season due to concerns over the global pandemic. The Georgia product stepping up at the most important position on the offensive line could really elevate the team’s ceiling in 2020.

Potential has never been a question with Wynn. Injuries have derailed the first two years of his NFL career. Prior to missing eight games with a foot injury last season, the former Bulldog was sidelined for his entire rookie campaign after suffering a torn Achilles during the 2018 preseason.

Outside of Cam Newton, one could argue that Wynn’s performance will be the Patriots’ premier x-factor this year. After all, he’ll be the player tasked with blocking the injury-prone quarterback’s blindside. If the 6-foot-2, 310-pound offensive lineman is able to stay on the field and realize a small portion of his largely untapped potential, chances are that Newton remains healthy. That has to be the number one priority for New England, no?

Wynn being fully healthy for the entire offseason means that he’s had the time to build strength and develop his craft, which is pretty scary when you consider that those are two aspects of his game that have never been doubted.

The young left tackle is clearly humbled and ready to silence his critics in Year 3, so fans in New England shouldn’t be surprised if he emerges as one of the Patriots’ most important players this season.
