Patriots: Jermaine Wiggins’ take on 2001 Super Bowl team will anger Tom Brady fans

Former Patriots TE Jermaine Wiggins has a bold take on the 2001 Super Bowl team.

The New England Patriots became a dynasty when Tom Brady took over at quarterback during the 2001 season. They won the Super Bowl that year — the first in franchise history — and Bill Belichick promptly traded former starter Drew Bledsoe that offseason.

Bledsoe getting injured paved way for Brady’s 20-year reign with the Pats, which ended with six championships (tied for the most in NFL history) before he departed for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this offseason.

But it appears as if a former Patriots player thinks that ’01 team would’ve been just fine with Bledsoe under center … Jermaine Wiggins, who was on that championship squad, says the team would’ve won it all with the veteran calling the shots.

Ohhhh boy. Where are the Tom Brady stans? And what do they have to say about this? Even though he left the team, there’s no doubt he’ll have his backers in New England for the rest of time.

Wiggins said if the Patriots were running the football and playing defense the way they were that year and Bledsoe was the QB, they would’ve won the Super Bowl. That certainly could be true, considering Brady didn’t exactly blow away opposing defenses with 2,843 yards, 18 touchdowns and 12 INTs, but Bledsoe had his chance already!

The Patriots lost the Super Bowl in 1996 with Bledsoe running the show. He only managed to capture two division crowns during his nine-year run in New England. He was also just 3-3 in the postseason. Brady won three games (though only passed for one touchdown) in his first three playoff games.

TB12 clearly brought something to the table Bledsoe could not, and there’s no sense in revisiting this especially now that we have both of these quarterbacks’ resumes in full right in front of us.

Brady won it and then won five more. Sure, the defense and the run game helped, but he provided moxie and leadership qualities that led to a Hall of Fame career.
