Patriots fans will love Cam Newton’s old security blanket Greg Olsen sticking up for him.

Very few people know Cam Newton’s drive, determination, and on-target throws better than former Carolina Panthers TE Greg Olsen. Naturally, he thinks the Patriots got a steal when they inked his old signal caller.

Olsen, now trying to make things work in Seattle after flirting with the broadcast booth and battling injuries concurrent with Newton’s rehab these past few years, was blown away when he saw the leaked contract details on his old QB’s new deal.

Quite frankly, so were we.

“My head popped off when I found out how much he signed for. It’s the all-time greatest deal,” Olsen said during an appearance on ESPN’s First Take on Thursday. “New England is going to find out pretty quick what a special competitor he is.”

Frankly, the presence of a tight end like Olsen is basically the only thing Newton’s Patriots roster is missing. Awash in a sea of mediocre wideouts and ‘backs, Newton relied on Olsen to carry his offense in 2015, using the incredibly reliable threat as a safety valve down the field routinely during his MVP season.

’15 was one of three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons Olsen posted under Newton’s guidance.

Olsen also tried to quell the worries of Patriots fans who feel like Newton won’t mesh with Bill Belichick’s hard-nosed style. In reality, that’s just false — the two men share identical goals.

“The one thing he’s going to learn about Cam is no one wants to win more than him, nobody’s gonna come every day and practice harder and train harder and prepare better,” Olsen continued. “The things that Cam does so well are pretty much that whole ‘Patriot Way’ of everything is about winning. Cam is going to check all those boxes, so I don’t think they’re going to have any issues on that front.”

Before the Patriots deal became official, Olsen thought Newton was bound elsewhere — sorry, Bears fans, this one stings.

Ouch.

Once again, the Patriots waited everyone out and got the best deal on the table, long after Chicago leapt at inferior options.

Don’t believe in your QB yet, Pats fans? You should probably listen to Olsen, who knows him best. If the Seahawks cut him during preseason, I think we have a TE solution, too.

Next. Josh McDaniels has been waiting for Cam Newton for a decade. dark
