Hunter Renfrow autographs his own custom Patriots jersey
Hunter Renfrow, wide receiver and future NFL draftee, autographed a custom Patriots jersey with his nameplate on it at the Clemson football spring game.
If it’s really possible to manifest your dreams and make them a reality, then former Clemson Tiger and future NFL draft pick Hunter Renfrow is doing a fine job of securing his destiny as a wide receiver with the New England Patriots.
Renfrow made headlines last month when he recounted the story of a dream he had in which he attended a team meeting with Tom Brady as a member of the Patriots franchise. Renfrow has been linked to New England professional for much of his collegiate career, as he fits the profile of the prototypical Patriots wide receiver: a bit undersized, smart, tough, excellent route-runner, and a propensity for coming up clutch when it’s needed most (see Exhibit A: his game-winning touchdown reception in the 2017 National Championship final).
The comparisons to New England greats like Julian Edelman, Wes Welker, and Danny Amendola have only grown louder and stronger over his time spent with Dabo Swinney as a Clemson Tiger. And now with the NFL Draft just a little over two weeks away, the imagined pairing of Renfrow with the Patriots continues to gain traction – so much so that one optimistic fan even decided to get in on the action a bit ahead of schedule.
Renfrow was a guest at Clemson’s annual spring game, and one man brought a New England Patriots jersey to the event to have Renfrow sign it. That in and of itself wouldn’t necessarily be news so much as wishful thinking; but the fan took things one step further by custom-ordering the Patriots jersey to have Renfrow’s nameplate on the back, along with the No. 13 he wore during his time at Clemson.
Of course, if Renfrow does in fact get drafted by the Patriots, he’ll most likely have to choose another number. The No. 13 in New England is currently worn by Philip Dorsett, who spent the last two seasons with the Patriots and just signed a one-year contract to stay with the team last month in free agency.
It remains to be seen whether Patriots general manager Bill Belichick likes the fit of Renfrow on his squad as much as the rest of us do. We’ll find out soon enough, but one thing’s for sure – New England desperately needs reinforcements at wide receiver in 2019. At least on paper, Renfrow would seem to be a logical choice if he’s available for the right price in a couple weeks.
