Hunter Renfrow, the senior standout wide receiver out of Clemson University, is dreaming of a chance to catch passes from Tom Brady on the Patriots.

With most of the free agent frenzy calming down now, eyes around the NFL will begin to turn slowly to the draft as the next major event circled on league calendars. The New England Patriots have a number of holes to fill on their roster, but none of them might be more glaring than wide receiver.

Super Bowl 53 MVP Julian Edelman returns, but there’s not much beyond him. Chris Hogan may or may not re-sign with the team. Cordarrelle Patterson left for the Windy City. Josh Gordon is still indefinitely suspended and receiving medical treatment for his substance abuse problems. Who else is left to catch passes from Tom Brady in 2019?

Maybe it’s time for the Pats to look to the future and find their answer in the collegiate ranks.

Hunter Renfrow is a senior at Clemson University, where he’s helped the Tigers win two national championships in the past three years. Casual sports fans will remember Renfrow for his game-winning touchdown catch (courtesy of Deshaun Watson) two years ago in the National Championship against Alabama, but he’s more than just that moment.

Renfrow is a legitimate receiver prospect in the mold of a Wes Welker or Julian Edelman – he’s only 5’11 and weighs 180 lbs, but he can catch the football and make people miss with it in his hands. He’s also a dangerous threat in the return game, much like Welker and Edelman before him.

So would New England consider adding him to their roster next month? It’s hard to predict what Bill Belichick is thinking on draft days, but one thing’s for sure – Renfrow is very much interested in coming to Foxborough. Apparently, he’s so interested in becoming a Patriot that he literally dreamt he was in a meeting with Tom Brady recently.

Renfrow laughed off the dream and was quick to point out it doesn’t mean anything necessarily. He also clarified that as much as he would love to be a Patriot, he would also love to be wherever he ends up getting drafted.

Let’s just hope dreams do come true next month for Renfrow and New England, after all.
