Rob Gronkowski’s down year hasn’t dampened his spirits or resolve
Rob Gronkowski has battled injuries and ineffectiveness all season long, but he claims to be in a great place now and has his mind on the present, not the future, as the playoffs await.
It’s no secret that Patriots all-world tight end Rob Gronkowski was seriously contemplating retirement during the offseason. Some theorists believe it would have happened had New England prevailed in the Super Bowl. Others suggest it was only a calculated threat made to negate a trade to the Detroit Lions.
After 41-year-old quarterback Tom Brady reasserted his plans to play next season, Gronk was asked if he also planned on being out there in 2019.
"“I haven’t been thinking about that at all. We’re on the last game, Week 17, we’ve got the Jets. That’s all I’m really worried about now. We got this big game Sunday, still, and the playoffs after, so that’s the last thing on my mind right now. I love the grind. I’m all in. I’ve been all in all season — no matter if it’s been up, if it’s been down. And I’m going to tell you this right now, I’m going to be all-in for the rest of the year no matter what it is. That’s my main focus, no matter how it goes.”"
Gronkowski’s year has been self-described as “challenging” as he’s worked to overcome a number of obstacles and setbacks. He has missed three full games this season due to various injuries, and his three touchdowns on the year are tied for the lowest mark of his career.
Statistically-speaking at least, it’s no surprise that the big tight end has been frustrated with his production and performance.
Hopefully, for his sake and for the sake of the New England offense, Gronk can get back to doing what he does best in time for the playoffs: spiking the ball in the end zone.
