Patriots Rumors: Trade Offer for Brandin Cooks Rejected by Saints
By Nick Ziegler
Recent New England Patriots rumors have been that they recently offered the 32nd overall pick in the NFL Draft for New Orleans Saints wide receiver Brandin Cooks.
As free agency approaches, there have been plenty of Patriots rumors. Due to the Patriots having a lot of free agents, there has been a lot of speculation about what will happen with some of them.
Recent reports are very interesting. According to Josh Katzenstein of NOLA.com, the Patriots offered the 32nd overall pick for Cooks.
While this is a pretty solid offer for Cooks, the Saints reportedly turned it down. They are seeking a mid-first round selection, and that is obviously something that the Patriots don’t have.
The Patriots’ interest in Cooks is surprising. With a pretty solid wide receiving corps, that position doesn’t appear to be one that is really a need as of now. However, Cooks is certainly a talented player.
In the high-powered Saints offense last season, Cooks totaled 1,173 receiving yards, 78 receptions, and eight receiving touchdowns. This was the second consecutive season that Cooks totaled over 1,000 yards, as he has proven to be a good wide receiver.
While the Patriots might not be able to acquire Cooks, it’s clear that the Saints are trying to trade him. For New England, this could be an indication that they will be pursuing a free agent wide receiver this offseason.
Due to Martellus Bennett being a free agent, the Patriots might be looking to replace his production at tight end with another receiver. Recently released Brandon Marshall has been linked to New England, and the Patriots pursuing Cooks could be an indication that they will pursue Marshall as well.
