4. Keshawn Martin vs. Chris Harper vs. DeAndre Carter

With Aaron Dobson on the trading block these days, it’s safe to say that the Patriots aren’t interested in keeping the underachieving fourth-year pro around (although before that news, this writer thought the Pats were going to take Dobson). That leaves an open competition for the No. 5 wideout spot behind Julian Edelman, Malcolm Mitchell, Chris Hogan and Danny Amendola between 2015 returners Martin and Harper and sophomore pro Carter.

Predicting Patriots final depth chart, preseason Week 4 edition

Martin could be viewed as the front runner because he has demonstrated experience operating as the Edelman/Amendola type in the Patriots’ aerial attack. Then again, Harper was one of the major stories of training camp as an undrafted rookie and he holds a bunch of potential as a playmaker. And you can’t rule out Carter despite his 5-foot-8 height; the Patriots seem keen on the Sacremento State product’s slot ability. This one could go anyway, but right now the hunch is…

Edge: Martin
