1. Malcom Brown

2015 story: The Patriots’ first round pick in the 2015 NFL Draft appeared in every game last season, making 12 starts. The 6-foot-2, 320-pound Texas product totalled 31 tackles, three sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries. He was one of the better defensive rookies in the NFL, especially as the season wore on.

8 most essential players on Patriots’ roster

Why he’s ranked at No. 1: At just 22 years of age, Brown is an extremely valuable player for the Patriots. He has a rare blend of width and nimble feet, which makes for surprisingly effective interior pass rushing. Of course, Brown makes his bread defending the run. He’s this generation’s Vince Wilfork.

Main training camp competitor(s): Brown will be competing with Branch and Knighton for the top spot on the depth chart. Youth beats out experience here.

Chances of making team: 10/10. No question.
