Patriots: Top 6 breakout candidates on defense

3. Shea McClellin

Although he won’t be a Week 1 starter due to the presence of Dont’a Hightower and Jamie Collins at the top of the linebacker depth chart, McClellin is a breakout candidate because he will be the first player called upon to fill-in should Hightower or Collins get hurt. Considering how injury-prone both of those guys are (especially Hightower), McClellin will likely get his chance at some point.

McClellin was a solid player with the Chicago Bears but his career has yet to really lift off. However, his diverse skill set fits the Patriots’ scheme perfectly. A change of scenery ought to do McClellin well.

It’s nice to have McClellin on board, as he is an upgrade over Jonathan Freeny on the depth chart.
