This is an interesting deal, as it is much higher than I thought it would be. $3.5 million GUARANTEED is a good chunk of money, so Bill Belichick must feel like McClellin will be able to contribute to this team right away.
As it sits right now, I think McClellin will fit as the third linebacker behind Dont’a Hightower and Jamie Collins. With Jerod Mayo retiring, there is a hole at that spot, and McClellin seems to be the favorite to take it. Jonathan Freeny did okay last year, but McClellin certainly has more potential, and while things didn’t pan out in Chicago, hopefully Belichick will be able to get him to play at his best.
Another thing that McClellin has going for him is his versatility. He can play as a pass rusher, an edge linebacker, and on the inside, which is something Freeny cannot do.
This has been one of the best offseasons in recent memory for the Patriots, not necessarily for the McClellin signing, but for the Chandler Jones trade (which netted a first round pick and a talented guard) and more importantly, landing tight end Marcellus Bennett from the Bears.
