New England Patriots kick-off in 47 days: profiling No. 47 Michael Hoomanawanui
Opening day countdowns are great. So are player profiles. Here at Musket Fire, we decided to combine them and create a Week 1 countdown-oriented, jersey number-dictated player profile series. Yesterday we looked at No. 48 Geneo Grissom, and the day before that it was No. 49 Joe Cardona. Because today marks 47 days until the New England Patriots open 2015, we are profiling No. 47, veteran tight end Michael Hoomanwanui.
Often called “Hooman” by commentators fumbling to pronounce his last name, and sports bloggers to lazy to type the whole thing, the Illinois product was selected by the St. Louis Rams in the fifth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. Over the course of his five years in the league, Hooman has played in 49 games, racking up 40 receptions for 518 yards and four touchdowns.
In the entire regular season, Hooman notched just three catches for 44 yards. But during the Divisional Round against the Baltimore Ravens, Hooman hauled in four passes for 43 yards and played a central role in the eligible offensive lineman trick plays the Patriots pulled in that game.

Hooman will forever be remembered for his involvement in the scuffle at the end of Super Bowl XLIX, for which he earned an $8,268 fine from the league.
Respected known for his commitment to the Patriot Way throughout New England, Hooman’s days wearing Patriot blue may be coming to an end. He’s never been of much use as a receiver, and his blocking ability isn’t what it used to be. With rookie A.J. Derby breathing down his neck on the depth chart, it’s a toss-up as to whether or not Hooman will make the roster, as Derby is an excellent pass catcher.
