Opening day countdowns are great. So are player profiles. Here at Musket Fire, we decided to combine them and create a Week 1 countdown-oriented, jersey number-dictated player profile series. Yesterday, we looked at No. 66 Bryan Stork, and the day before that it was No. 67 Josh Kline. Because today marks 65 days until the New England Patriots open 2015, we are profiling No. 65, offensive lineman Jordan Devey.

Devey ended up on the Patriots’ practice squad in 2013 after being released by the Ravens that summer, and he stayed there all season. That dedicated time on the practice field paid off, as the Memphis product got the starting nod at right guard in Week 1 last season. It was not only his first career NFL start, but also the first time he appeared in an NFL game.

In addition, Devey saw action at left guard when he filled in for the injured Dan Connolly at midseason. All told, Devey started in four of the seven regular season games he appeared in last season. He was inactive for the entirety of the Patriots’ postseason run.

For the most part, Devey struggled in the limited action he had in 2014. Against the Dolphins in the opener, he was the poster boy for the offensive line’s struggles. Give Devey credit for climbing out of undrafted anonymity to a Week 1 starting gig at left guard, but don’t count on him making the team this summer.

The Patriots’ decision to draft two guards this spring, Tre’ Jackson and Shaq Mason, indicates that they are not entirely confident that Devey will pan out into a consistent starting guard. His talents may be better suited as a depth tackle, but on the whole, Devey’s chances of making the final roster are not favorable.

In case you missed them, here are the profiles for No. 68 Caylin Hauptmann, No. 69 Shaq Mason, No. 71 Cameron Fleming, No. 72 Joe Vellano, No. 74 Trey Flowers, No. 76 Sebastian Vollmer, No. 77 Nate Solder, No. 80 Danny Amendola, No. 82 Josh Boyce, No. 84 Brian Tyms, No. 85 Jake Bequette and No. 86 A.J. Derby.

Be sure to check back on Musket Fire tomorrow morning as we celebrate 64 days until Week 1 by profiling No. 64, offensive guard Chris Barker.
