Recent Patriots rumors have emerged about what might happen to Martellus Bennett this offseason. Will he leave the Patriots?

As the offseason heats up, recent Patriots rumors have been about tight end Martellus Bennett. After a great 2016 season with the Patriots, Bennett could be leaving New England in free agency according to Ian Rapoport.

Last offseason, the Patriots made a great move when they were able to acquire Bennett from the Chicago Bears. In his career, Bennett has bounced around a bit, but he has shown the ability to be one of the top tight ends in the NFL.

The acquisition of Bennett was originally to pair him next to Rob Gronkowski for the Patriots to utilize their great two tight end formations on offense. Due to injuries to Gronkowski, the two didn’t play all that much together.

Instead of being a sidekick for Gronkowski, Bennett ended up being a great insurance policy. Even though he played with a cracked bone in his ankle, Bennett was able to be a great weapon for the Patriots’ offense.

In 2016, Bennett totaled 55 receptions, 701 receiving yards, and seven receiving touchdowns. After a down season with the Bears in 2015, Bennett really bounced back nicely, as he revived his career with the Patriots.

For Bennett, this offseason will be challenging. He has certainly liked and appreciated his time in New England, but keeping him will be difficult. On the defensive side of the ball, the Patriots have a lot of free agents that they will need to re-sign.

Also, due to the success of Bennett, he might have played his way to a substantial contract. It is very difficult to find a tight end of Bennett’s caliber. Furthermore, a team will likely pay a pretty penny to sign him. Unless he is willing to give the Patriots a discount, expect to see Bennett playing elsewhere next season.
