2013 NFL Mock Draft: New England Patriots select David Amerson

The New England Patriots took another cornerback in the second round of the most recent 2013 NFL Mock Draft done on the FanSided.com main page, as the Patriots selected North Carolina State Wolfpack star CB David Amerson with the 59th pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Amerson is a prospect who has received mixed grades, but I am higher on him than most people. I am also not a fan of this pick, and that has to do with the cornerback the Patriots passed up on in this mock draft scenario.

With the 62nd pick in this 2013 NFL Mock Draft, the Baltimore Ravens took Mississippi State Bulldogs star CB Johnthan Banks off the board. Now that is an absolute steal, and I highly doubt Banks is available by that time in the real draft. But if he is, then the Patriots would likely have a tough time justifying passing up on Banks. He used to be a top-half first-round pick before his draft stock took a steep drop thanks to speed concerns relating to a poor 2013 NFL Combine.

Amerson is starting to get a bit underrated, and I talked to somebody who said there is more to Amerson’s story and how he struggled last season. Let’s just say that his great forty time at the Combine is one reason to believe that Amerson’s struggles with getting burned last season wasn’t the whole story- that’s the furthest I am allowed to go.

Banks would be an excellent pick in the late second round for the Patriots, because his size and ability in press coverage would fit the Pats. And, of course, he would be an absolute steal for this team in the late second. Banks is rumored to be high on the Patriots wish list this draft, and it would be huge for him to fall in their laps at 59. I have a hard time envisioning the Patriots talking another CB there if Banks is on the board. In fact, it is impossible for me to envision that happening.

David Amerson is viewed by some scouts as a third day draft prospect, and that’s just crazy talk. If he falls past the third round of the draft, then he definitely fell too far. Amerson is boom-or-bust at this point, and some still aren’t sold as to whether or not he can play at CB. My belief is that Amerson should be drafted as a cornerback unless if he proves that he translates better at safety- he looks like a CB to me. If he is available for the Pats in the late third, then I would take him off the board.
