Unheralded Patriots rookie reveals which team legends have inspired his sudden rise

Bet you can guess!

On most teams, there wouldn't be a lot expected of Efton Chism. The wide receiver out of Eastern Washington went undrafted this year, signing a UDFA deal with the Patriots almost two weeks after the draft ended.

But, of course, that's not how it works in New England. When you're an undrafted/late round wide receiver with the Patriots, you're expected to live to wildly unfair expectations. It sucks, but that's life when you join an organization that's spent the last 20 years watching Wes Welker and Julian Edleman. If you are a spunky, undersized, undervalued slot receiver, New England is the move.

So it should probably surprise absolutely no one that Chism is watching a lot of Welker and Edleman's film. It is so predictable, in fact, that you almost didn't need a tweet to let you know that he's doing that; I imagine you probably could have guessed. But there's always a tweet, so here it is:

Efton Chism gives the most Patriots answer of all time at minicamp

I mean, yeah. Of course he is. And even if he isn't actually, Chism's clearly clever enough to talk about it like he is. Patriots fans will eat that stuff up faster than you can spell Edleman. It was always going to be those two. It will forever be those two. Somewhere Robert Kraft is in an executive suite or private jet smiling and pumping his fist. We got another one!, he says to no one in particular.

Who knows if Chism's even going to make the final roster – although it's not like the Patriots' wide receiver room is that competitive – but I have to give him a little credit for playing the hits. The training camp narrative is officially set, and it never hurts to potentially be the next Welker or Edelman. I wonder if he's watching any Chris Hogan tape too?
