The New England Patriots have been without one of their most explosive offensive players, running back TreVeyon Henderson, since Thursday of last week when he was sent home with an unknown illness.

With speculation swirling around the Patriots potentially looking to trade Henderson ahead of the NFL’s Nov. 10 deadline, Henderson himself released a statement on Friday detailing just how serious the situation he’s been dealing with is.

The 24-year-old described a medical condition that has affected him both physically and mentally, forcing him to step off the field to focus on his health and long-term well-being.

“Recently, I experienced an unexpected and unusual medical emergency involving a series of unexplained neurological symptoms that required hospitalization for several days. During that time, I underwent extensive medical testing and evaluation. While the results of my comprehensive medical testing have come back positive and reassuring, the cause of this remains unknown and unexplainable.

I will continue working closely with specialists and physical therapists to focus on my recovery, as these symptoms affected my strength, coordination, and some of my physical functions. I am committed to doing everything necessary to return to full health.”

Henderson has not practiced with the Patriots since Oct. 29 and the team hasn’t yet provided a timetable on his potential return to the team. Head coach Mike Vrabel was scheduled to speak on Friday afternoon.

Running back just became much harder for the Patriots to ignore at the NFL trade deadline

Given Vrabel’s ties to the Tennessee Titans and running back Derrick Henry, the rumor mill is always going to swirl around this time of year.

Expect those rumors to dial up to a fever pitch in the coming days.

Henry’s Baltimore Ravens played on Thursday Night Football with undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano at quarterback and looked like a complete mess. The Ravens passed for 55 yards in the game and Henry, who often took snaps out of a wildcat formation during the game, finished with a team-best QB rating of 79.2; Fagnano’s was 22.7.

The Ravens dropped below .500 and are reportedly bringing in veteran Jacoby Brissett ahead of the trade deadline as a last gasp to save their season. Baltimore’s top two quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson (thumb) and Tyler Huntley (toe), were placed on injured reserve this week.

Henry’s contract is extremely tradable, as the Ravens have already paid out the majority of the veteran running back’s $14 million salary. He has no guarantees remaining in 2027 and an acquiring team at the deadline this year would owe him less than $1 million.

The Patriots have the luxury of Rhamondre Stevenson, who’s more than capable of filling a three-down role and is a key pass protector for quarterback Drake Maye. But New England will miss Henderson’s speed if he’s out for an extended period of time. Corey Kiner has been a solid contributor in the RB3 role, but the depth chart feels extremely thin without Henderson in the mix.

As far as the Patriots’ trade deadline wish list, running back was well behind position groups like edge defender, nose tackle, and tight end a week ago. If Henderson’s statement on Friday is any indication, running back just vaulted up the team’s list of roster priorities.
