The New England Patriots' offseason has been busy, trying to bolster positions that needed improvement. The results have been a mixed bag. They did fine at safety and offensive tackle, but other positions like edge, tight end, and offensive guard are still lacking.
One position that's in solid shape, with two top backs and several candidates to fill in two other spots, is running back. They have veteran Rhamondre Stevenson and second-year back TreVeyon Henderson.
Stevenson is a solid NFL running back when he holds onto the ball. He's a strong inside runner. Conversely, Henderson provides the lightning to complement Stevenson's thunder. He's electric with the ball in his hands, and he's getting duly noticed.
ESPN'S Eric Moody suggested four players fantasy football participants should trade for before the 2026 season. At the top of his list is the Patriots' dynamic running back Henderson.
TreVeyon Henderson is a 2026 breakout candidate for the Patriots
Last season, Henderson racked up 911 yards on the ground with a five-yard average per carry and nine touchdowns. He augmented those solid numbers with 235 catches for 221 yards and another score.
It was an impressive rookie season, and now Moody has pointed Henderson out as a good fantasy football bet.
"The flashes Henderson showed last season, even with Rhamondre Stevenson still involved, were real. Henderson stockpiled 1,132 scrimmage yards and 10 touchdowns, averaged 5.1 yards per carry and had three games with 28-plus fantasy points. Stevenson will have a role, but his fumbling issues could create an opening for Henderson to push for more work.
If Henderson's offseason focus on blocking and pass-catching translates, he has the explosiveness to separate himself as the most valuable back in an exciting offense led by quarterback Drake Maye."
One point that's askew, however, is his suggestion that blocking should be a major aspect of his game. In 2026, being a smaller back, Henderson wasn't the best blocker early in the season and was ostensibly benched for that reason.
That ill-advised coaching gaffe cost both Henderson a chance to rush for well over 1,000 yards and the team the chance to be even more dominant than it was.
Setting Henderson up to block is akin to putting a thoroughbred racehorse behind a plow. It's a total misuse of his most devastating attributive, his explosiveness. Thankfully, by mid-season, the coaching staff woke up and realized that the young former Ohio State running back was a threat to take the rock to the house on any given play.
The rocket-like Henderson did just that. He exploded for a team record four touchdown runs of 50 yards or more and provided the big-play punch the team lacked for years. The expectations, as Moody suggests, for the former Buckeye should be sky-high in his second season. Expect well over 1,000 yards rushing and 300 or more yards through the air at a minimum. ,
The Patriots have an NFL star and maybe future Pro-Bowler on their hands. His name is TreVeyon Henderson.
