The New England Patriots have put themselves in an interesting position after an offseason that saw them add four new names to their wide receiver room. Stefon Diggs, Mack Hollins, and rookies Kyle Williams and Efton Chism III were all added, making the group far deeper than in 2024.
After a blowout win against the Panthers in Week 4, the Patriots stand joint tenth in points per game, while Drake Maye has thrown for the sixth most yards in the league, eclipsing reigning MVP Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes.
While the new receivers have been nice additions, they haven't come without their quirks. Stefon Diggs is aging and hasn't been as consistent as people might have hoped, though Week 4 was his first-ever hundred-yard game as a Patriot. Kayshon Boutte has dropped off since his 103-yard Week 1 showing, and Mack Hollins, despite playing the second-most snaps at the position, has just seven catches. Pop Douglas is a non-factor, while Williams and Chism have hardly played.
Perhaps there's an opportunity for the Patriots to add another playmaker to further electrify the passing game?
Chris Olave is the perfect Patriots trade candidate
The 0-4 New Orleans Saints have just about nothing going for them at this point. Their quarterback situation is bad, and rookie Tyler Shough is both older than Spencer Rattler and unlikely to change their fortune.
As a whole, the team is disappointing and aging: Alvin Kamara is 30, and star linebacker Demario Davis will be 37 in January. They should unload aging players while they still can and jumpstart their inevitable rebuild.
One player who isn't aging but still could be moved is Chris Olave. The former OSU Buckeye has had a strange role this season. He averages a respectable 6.5 catches per game, but his yardage total is far lower than expected. He averages just 7.1 yards per catch at the moment, while in his three previous seasons, he never dipped below 12.5 yards per reception.
It's clear new coach Kellen Moore wants to use Olave in a high-volume, short-yardage role. Given the Saints' lack of success and his average of just 46 yards per game, it may be time for a change for the ex-Buckeye.
In a recent Sports Illustrated article by Matt Verderame and Gilberto Manzano, the pair suggests he could be had for a second-round pick, suggesting the Green Bay Packers be the ones to make the move.
Kayshon Boutte is the Patriots' main deep threat, but Olave can stretch the field when asked. His 4.39 speed shows on the field, and he'd be a massive upgrade to this wide receiver corps.
We'll see what the rest of the season holds, but it seems likely the Patriots' second-round pick will be in the middle of the round, somewhere around the No. 50 overall range. If Olave truly can be had for that, the team shouldn't have much reluctance in pulling the trigger.
