The A.J. Brown trade speculation has been so heavily slanted toward the New England Patriots that some are already listing him among their 2026 starters. This is the NFL, though, and transactions involving sure-fire No. 1 wide receivers like Brown aren’t made lightly.
And with one more veteran free agent now off the table, pressure could soon mount for New England as fans wait anxiously for a final verdict in early June.
According to ESPN, the Minnesota Vikings are signing former 49ers wide receiver Jauan Jennings to a one-year deal with a max potential value of $13 million. That may sound a bit rich for a player who hasn’t yet crested the 1,000-yard mark in a single season, but it could be a sign that a run on what had been a dormant wide receiver market is ready to come alive.
The Patriots could be feeling the pressure as viable WR alternatives start to disappear
Some quality veteran wideouts remain unsigned, including former Patriot Stefon Diggs, Keenan Allen, Deebo Samuel, and Tyreek Hill. One of those players, or the dozens of others still seeking a contract in 2026, could become viable options for New England if the Brown trade talks fall through.
The expectation, as ESPN insider Adam Schefter continues to report, is that Brown will be headed to Foxboro sometime on or around June 1. He also believes the compensation for Brown will include a future first-round pick, most likely the Patriots’ 2028 selection.
That would constitute a major departure from the norm for the Patriots, who have rarely swapped first-round draft capital for an established veteran player in their franchise’s history. The most recent example was their 2017 draft-day trade with the Saints that sent pick No. 32 overall to New Orleans in exchange for wide receiver Brandin Cooks. The same holds true for Mike Vrabel, as the Tennessee Titans never traded away a first-round pick during his six-year tenure as head coach.
As strong as the reporting has been on Brown to New England, there are never guarantees with a move of this magnitude. NFL trades like this involving premium draft capital typically come with a sizable extension or pay bump for the player. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Patriots attempt to take the opposite approach with Brown, who’s set to earn $29 million in cash this season on his current contract, per Spotrac. That would instantly make him the highest-paid player on the Patriots' roster this year.
Jennings may not have been a viable pivot option, but the contract he got from Minnesota just set the market. Coming off some disappointing offensive performances in the 2025 playoffs and Super Bowl LX, a wide receiver group led by Romeo Doubs, Mack Hollins, Kayshon Boutte, and Kyle Williams isn’t going to inspire the fan base.
An addition like A.J. Brown would instantly take that group from good to great. The clock is ticking, though, and the pressure on the Patriots to bring this pending trade to fruition will only increase with each veteran wide out who lands a new deal.
