It wouldn't be a proper NFL offseason for the New England Patriots if there wasn't some sort of allegation or scandal involving their team at some point, and that tradition continued this year, as Mike Vrabel has been at the center of an ongoing drama involving NFL insider Dianna Russini.

It has dominated headlines over the past few months, going all the way back to the Annual Owner's Meeting in Phoenix, and it has unfortunately continued throughout the NFL Draft and now, even the schedule release.

Ahead of the reveal on Thursday night, it was announced by various insiders that the league didn't set any rules about what teams could or couldn't do with their schedule release videos regarding Vrabel and Russini, essentially giving them a free-for-all to drag them into it as much as possible, and to an endless degree.

Given that freedom, it was quickly apparent that teams were ready to take advantage of the trolling opportunity, and several did so, in brutal fashion, to keep the gossip going.

Mike Vrabel can't escape the ongoing chatter about his cheating scandal

In the midst of every team unveiling their 2026 schedule, at least one team, the Los Angeles Chargers, made sure to get their jabs in on the Patriots' head coach in the best way that they could, especially since the NFL made it clear that they didn't really care what they did.

It was another harsh reminder of what the Patriots and Vrabel can't escape this offseason, as this distraction has really taken away from what they accomplished in 2025 and how they have hoped to maintain that momentum going into 2026.

Instead, it has been all about what Vrabel did, or didn't do, and what the league could decide to do about it, with rumors about a potential investigation and/or punishment coming at some point.

There have even been rumors that Robert Kraft and the higher-ups in New England have already devised a succession plan in case things go wrong with Vrabel over the next few months, with some suggesting that former longtime Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is at the top of their list of replacements.

The hope, of course, is that things won't get to that point, but it's never a bad idea to have something ready to go on the off chance it does.

Regardless, it's clear this isn't a topic that is going away any time soon, and that's the unfortunate truth the franchise and its fans will have to deal with moving forward. It would be nice, however, if the chatter would quiet down and shift the focus to what's ahead instead, though. But that's probably asking too much.
