Superstar prospect could be on Patriots trade-up radar in 2026 NFL Draft

There has been a lot of discourse surrounding the best path for the Patriots with their first-round pick, with most believing adding a dominant pass rusher is the way to go. Other analysts suggest they take a right tackle to replace Morgan Moses, since there is a possibility he could retire in 2027, leading many to consider it the biggest position of need instead.

But what if the Patriots went in a different direction, and rather than wait until they're on the clock at No. 31, they traded up for one of the positions that have been the weakest on their offense for a number of years?

We know they need to add a tight end from this year's draft class, but there's a big fall off from those believed to be first-rounders to the next batch, and that puts a lot of pressure on the Patriots to decide if it's worth holding off until a mid-round to take their next hopeful starter.

What appears to be a better course of action would be to trade up, if needed, and take the best prospect of this year's class and steal Kenyon Sadiq from Oregon State. Pairing him with Hunter Henry and giving Drake Maye another solid weapon is an absolute no-brainer.

The Patriots have plenty of reason to trade up in the first round for a superstar tight end prospect

The 21-year-old put together an impressive campaign at OSU and made a bigger name for himself with his Combine performance. He outdid every other tight end during the event and solidified himself as the No. 1 target at the position for all tight-end-needy teams.

It immediately draws attention to the Patriots, who have long needed a partner for Henry to work with, and that need has only grown stronger this season, since they didn't re-sign Austin Hooper and have only brought in a blocking type in Julian Hill.

Sadiq is a fine blocker, but his ability in the passing game makes him far more appealing for a Josh McDaniels-led offense, and that makes him worthy of trading up for.

He's currently projected to be a mid-to-late first-round pick, which works in the Patriots' favor at No. 31, so they shouldn't have to make too big a jump to get him on the roster. He would make an immediate impact, and because Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf have made it clear they want to upgrade the roster around the quarterback, it makes sense that Sadiq would be on their radar.

Vrabel is not one to hide his appreciation for tight ends, and seeing that a player who logged 51 receptions for 560 yards and eight touchdowns during the 2025 season is potentially available within their grasp could be enticing enough to make the trade to move up and make him their latest first-round selection.

Sadiq is the kind of player the Patriots' offense needs, as he is known for gaining separation well and winning in double coverage. His blocking would also allow Henry to remain as a pass-catcher, too, which doesn't appear to be the case with Hill, and this would allow him to learn from one of the best to eventually become the next TE1 in New England.

It should be something Vrabel and Wolf at least seriously consider. They need to add more talent in the tight end room, and the longer the wait in the draft, the less likely they'll be able to do that. So trading up for the best in the class makes a lot more sense than most might realize.
