The Patriots were coming off their bye week in the middle of a ten-game win streak that looked like it would easily continue early on their matchup against the Bills on Sunday. They looked every bit like the team at the top of not only the division, but the conference, until the second half, when they completely collapsed.
Josh Allen's efforts allowed Buffalo to steal the win in New England, the way the Patriots did earlier in the season in Buffalo, forcing the divisional champion to be crowned likely in the final game of the year.
It was a frustrating effort across the board for the Patriots, and it will make Mike Vrabel and Co. reevaluate where they are, as they prepare for another primetime game against the Ravens on Sunday Night Football.
And the hope is that they don't replicate the kind of disaster that was this week's game, and based on what some of the players have already said, including Stefon Diggs, they aren't willing to let that happen, even if Patriots fans aren't thrilled with what they had to say about the loss.
Stefon Diggs has a unique perspective on what Patriots' loss to the Bills can do for them moving forward
Despite the brutal way they lost the game, many reporters noticed that the vibe in the locker room was not that of a team that felt defeated, but more like one that was ready to fight back in their next opportunity.
Diggs certainly exhibited that with his immediate take, even admitting that perhaps they needed to lose this week's game to take some of the pressure off of what has been a season full of surprises so far.
Patriots fans won't love to hear it, but he makes a fair and decent point.
Stefon Diggs on the Patriots losing their first game since Week 3:
— Brian Hines (@iambrianhines) December 14, 2025
“It is definitely something – you never know, we probably needed it. Going on a little streak, not going to say it’s a lot of pressure, but you expect to win, as you should, each and every week…
“You just can’t…
This is a young and hungry roster, and sometimes the lights can be too bright, so dealing with a loss, even one that has the stink of too much referee interference, can be beneficial to bounce back from.
They haven't dealt with a loss since September, and sometimes, that can lead to complacency or a lack of improvement because clearly what they're doing is working. Whether that's what happened with them this week is unclear, but a loss gives them a lot to learn from, just as Diggs said, and they have the right people in the building to deal with and overcome it.
That's the hope for the Patriots going into their game against the Ravens, as the AFC East is still up for grabs despite the loss to the Bills. An unexpected win over Baltimore would help a lot, since Buffalo is now on their tails, just one game behind them for the divisional crown.
It puts a lot of pressure on the Patriots this week, and it will be fascinating to see how they choose to deal with it.
