The New England Patriots added several free agents to their roster. The team has several needs and has addressed some of them. One unit that needed a significant upgrade is the offensive line. They jettisoned steady but unspectacular 2025 center Garrett Bradbury. But the only O-line signing has been guard Alijah Vera-Tucker.
The Patriots entered free agency with no greater need than the offensive line. Last season, the O-line was an improvement over the lackluster 2024 version, but not by very much. In 2024, they allowed 52 sacks; in 2025, they reduced it to a still unacceptable 47.
Then in the playoffs, they did even worse, surrendering 21 in four games, including six in the Super Bowl loss.
Mike Vrabel and his personnel operations' lackluster efforts so far to bolster the O-line are puzzling. Protecting the quarterback should be the No. 1 priority every offseason. Not doing so is akin to negligence in football roster building. Vrabel still has time to add both in free agency and in the draft. He should do both.
SI.com's Mike D'Abate has named an unsigned free agent offensive tackle, Cam Robinson, who he feels could make an impact.
Cam Robinson would be a nice free agency addition for the Patriots' offensive line
The Patriots revamped their offensive line in 2025, yet that effort was never more than a stopgap. Center Bradbury was 30, and right tackle Morgan Moses was 34 years old. It was clear that both had to be replaced for longer-term solutions.
Bradbury is gone, and it's assumed that 2025's left guard, Jared Wilson, who's largely untested at center, will step into his position. The tackle position has not been addressed at all in free agency. It's a risky strategy by Vrabel and company.
In an article by Mike D'Abate of SI.com, he outlined several unsigned free agents who could be nice additions for the Patriots. One of them is offensive tackle Cam Robinson.
"One of the more intriguing options at a key position of need for New England is former Cleveland Browns lineman Cam Robinson. The veteran tackle brings both size and experience as a capable left tackle. At 6-foot-6, 335 pounds, Robinson possesses the size, as well as the ability to engulf pass rushers.
For a player of his Mass, he is also remarkably agile, with the foot speed to change directions during a play. Robinson’s 92.1% pass block win rate in 2025 was a career best — and would be an ideal fit for the Patriots’ positional need."
Robinson is a nine-year NFL veteran offensive tackle, though still only 30 years old. He'd be a nice insurance policy should Will Campbell have lingering effects of his knee injury, or if Moses goes out with an injury.
Meanwhile, it would still be incumbent on the Patriots to draft three or four young offensive linemen, including two tackles and two guards.
Young offensive linemen can start their careers as backups, e.g., as a swing tackle or an emergency starter at guard, depending on how high they are drafted. One of each position should be drafted high up in the draft, along with an edge.
Drake Maye's protection must be paramount every offseason, as well as providing him the best targets in the wide receiver and tight end rooms to catch his passes. Robinson makes a lot of sense in that regard.
