One of the more stunning events in the football landscape this season was the news last week that the former Patriots head coach was interviewing for the available role with the University of North Carolina. Because he was considered the top candidate for teams to hire during the 2025 offseason, he was expected to be on an NFL sideline next year.

But that doesn't appear to be in the cards anymore, as the latest rumor suggests UNC is set to finalize their contract with Belichick, and he will become their next head coach for the 2025 season.

While a formal announcement hasn't been made yet, Inside Carolina's Adam Smith revealed the news Wednesday afternoon, who has been on the story from the beginning. What had been considered implausible is now looking like a reality, and it might mean the end of an era in the NFL, something many were not prepared for nearing the 2025 offseason.

Bill Belichick is making a big move from the NFL to the NCAAF

This is a significant move for Belichick, especially since he was so close to accomplishing a legendary milestone by breaking Don Shula's longtime record of most wins by a head coach in league history, on top of wanting to prove Robert Kraft wrong for firing him.

However, his plans to make UNC a more successful program with direct connections to the pros were too good for the school to pass up.

His old-school, tough-love style could dramatically transform the football team, and his desire to help the players get into NFL shape will make the program more desirable for future recruits. Plus, Belichick is hoping to keep a legacy going in North Carolina by having his son and former Patriots defensive coordinator Stephen succeed him when he decides to officially retire.
