After watching the offense collapse in the Super Bowl against the Seahawks, there was a sense of urgency for the Patriots to improve their roster around Drake Maye this offseason. For the most part, Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf followed through on accomplishing that.
They have signed a few stud players in free agency, most notably offensive lineman Alijah Vera-Tucker and wide receiver Romeo Doubs, and there is more work to be done.
That is especially true for the receiving corps now that Stefon Diggs is no longer around, but it's clear that Doubs can help fill the void in his absence. Most have already compared him to the veteran and believe he's capable of doing everything Diggs did last season in 2026.
There are some questions about his suitability as a WR1, however, as he never held that role during his years with the Packers. That will remain a question until we see what he can do on the field, but the confidence Doubs has is something Patriots fans will love to hear.
It certainly helps ease any concerns with the team not signing any other receiver yet.
Romeo Doubs isn't shying away from the chance to become a WR1 for the Patriots
Doubs shared that confidence during a pre-free agency appearance on Richard Sherman's podcast, and although he didn't know he was going to sign with the Patriots at the time, it's clear that he's ready for the opportunity to carry the load and believes wholeheartedly that if given the chance, he can be the top pass catcher for Drake Maye.
Romeo Doubs believes he can be a WR1. In 2025:

Diggs - 102 tgts
Doubs - 85 tgts
WR1s look different on every team. I think Doubs can take on those extra 17 targets and more in 2026, if asked.

Considering that's exactly what the Patriots need for the 2026 season, it's good to hear that Doubs is ready for the challenge if that's set in front of him.
There's still a chance that a bigger name player makes their way to Foxboro, particularly AJ Brown via trade, and that would likely put any lingering concerns to rest about the receiving corps and the future of Maye. But Doubs might be the right guy for the job; we just have to see.
He's a talented player and proved he could be that guy during his tenure in Green Bay, but they just had a deeper roster that didn't allow him to be a true No. 1. He looks like he's on the path to geting that chance in New England, and if he succeeds, then Vrabel and Wolf deserve a lot more credit for signing him since most weren't all that thrilled.
