Why the New England Patriots should pursue recently cut cornerback
The New England Patriots defense is going to be top ten in the NFL this season, but that does not mean that they are a complete unit. The cornerback room is thin, and there is cause for concern with potential injuries and off-the-field issues. Recent news of the New Orleans Saints cutting veteran cornerback Bradley Roby should entice the Patriots as they could use another corner.
The Patriots should look to sign Roby and bolster their cornerback room, which would enhance their elite defense.
The case for the Patriots signing Roby is that he is a 31-year-old corner with needed experience in a mostly young cornerback room. The Patriot's trio of young corners with Christian Gonzalez, Marcus Jones, and Jack Jones have the potential to be great, but they are still young. Although the Patriots already have Jalen Mills and Jonathan Jones, they could use Roby as another experienced vet. I want the Patriots to have a lot of veterans showing Gonzalez the ropes because I think he has a chance to be one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL when he’s in his prime.
Roby also is still a solid player who could enhance the defense this season. Last season, Roby started 10 games and had five pass deflections and two fumble recoveries. The Patriots could use another guy that they can count on with their defense. With a multitude of elite quarterbacks on the schedule this season, the Patriots are going to need a complete and stellar cornerback room.
Signing Roby wouldn’t be a surprise because Belichick has addressed needs this offseason. Belichick’s recent signing of Ezekiel Elliott is a sign that he could pursue Roby because he went after a proven commodity.
Ultimately, it will be interesting to see if the Patriots show interest in Roby.
