The Patriots are working on a short week for their game against the Jets on Thursday Night Football, their one and only primetime game of the 2024 season. It will be a night likely taken over by Aaron Rodgers' return to the field and his first matchup against one of New York's bitter rivals on their home turf.

It's also the Patriots' first game against a divisional opponent this season, making it even more crucial for them to walk out of MetLife Stadium with a win, if not for their own playoff chances, which most believe won't be happening, but to disrupt the Jets' hopes of winning the division and making a Super Bowl run.

Because it's happening on a short week, however, both teams are unable to avoid the injury bug and have already declared a handful of players out. The Patriots are suffering the worst fate, as they lost one of their best tacklers and captain Ja'Whaun Bentley to a season-ending injury. They will also need to do more shuffling on the offensive line with their second starting left tackle missing Thursday's matchup.

Don't be surprised if this is a game that comes down to the running backs demolishing the opposing defense.

The Patriots are down one of their best run defenders, leaving their defensive line vulnerable to the demolition Braelon Allen and Breece Hall will inevitably bring. The Jets, on the other hand, allowed 180 rushing yards by the 49ers in Week 1 and 130 by the Titans last week, creating a huge opportunity for Rhamondre Stevenson and Antonio Gibson to wreak havoc on the field.

It will certainly be a fun game to watch that will hopefully go in the Patriots' favor to continue defying expectations for their 2024 season.

Referees for Patriots vs. Jets

John Hussey will be the head referee for Thursday's game. He began his career in the NFL in 2002 as a line judge and moved up to his current position in 2015. The Patriots vs. Jets will be his 150th game called.

Over the last nine seasons, Hussey seems to be fairly down the middle with penalties, hovering around 50% of calls on home and away teams. However, home teams have won far more in games he's called the away team, which isn't the kind of stat you want to see when the Patriots are playing on the road this week.

This will be the first Patriots game he has been the head referee for in two years, as his last game was when the Dolphins played at Gillette Stadium on September 11, 2022. Miami won that game singlehandedly, walking out of Foxboro with a 20-7 victory.

Hopefully, the Patriots will have a different fate this time.
