The Patriots are set to finish the first month of the 2024 season against the 49ers in Santa Clara, making it another opponent on the schedule that doesn't appear to give them the best chance of leaving September with a .500 record.

The 49ers have had a disappointing start to the year, especially after losing the Super Bowl this past February. They are likely going to come into this game with a chip on their shoulder to prove the doubters wrong about their path back this season.

Unfortunately, both teams are dealing with a long list of injuries, making the task much more difficult. There isn't a lot of optimism that the Patriots will be able to squeak out another win like they did against the Bengals in the season opener, especially after how they played against the Jets last week on Thursday Night Football.

However, with some reinforcements expected back in the lineup, like starting left guard Sidy Sow, they should (at least) have a better chance to do some things successfully on offense and show improvement that could hopefully hold them over the rest of the season.

The head referee for the Patriots matchup with the 49ers on Sunday will be Scott Novak, who began his career in the NFL in 2014 as a side judge and moved to his current position in 2019.

Novak last officiated a Patriots game in Week 12 of the 2023 season, when they played the Giants in an unforgettably forgettable matchup. The game was led by the continued decline of Mac Jones, who threw two interceptions and totaled just 89 passing yards, and the offense lost three fumbles to New York.

The hope, of course, is that today's game will be far different than that, preferably with the Patriots, at the very least, showing some life on offense; if not, take home the win.

Fortunately, based on how he has officiated games thus far in 2024, Novak and his crew shouldn't become a fixture in the game much as other crews have over the past week since he has recorded the sixth-fewest penalty calls through the first three weeks.
