Promising tackle could be a difference maker for Patriots offense
The Patriots offensive line has been a continuous problem over the last few years, and despite their efforts to improve the group this offseason, they didn't perform up to par with most throughout training camp and the preseason. This created a lot of concern as roster cuts were underway, with many hoping their high positioning on the waiver wire would be an opportunity to snag some solid additions.
Although great offensive linemen are not a usual roster cut casualty given how few and far between they are to find, the Patriots did add two tackles on Wednesday, one of whom looks like he could be an excellent fit for what the team needs.
That player is Demontrey Jacobs, a 2023 undrafted free agent who spent his rookie season on the Broncos practice squad. After putting together a standout offseason, he was competing for a spot on Denver's roster, and that was their plan even after he was waived.
The hope was that he would go unclaimed and that they could sign him to their practice squad, but the Patriots recognized the talent of the 6’6”, 315-pound tackle and claimed him real quick.
He adds a big body to the depleted left tackle roster, which has been a continuous problem this summer, and with more development, it's possible the offense could have their next solid starter. He already proved he's a talented and athletic player throughout the preseason, something reflected in his PFF grading.
The Patriots added a low-risk left tackle with a high upside just in the nick of time
Upon hearing the news of who the Patriots were awarded from their claims on the waiver wire, there wasn't a lot of excitement regarding the new additions, mainly due to their inexperience in the league.
However, some of those concerns were erased when it was clear that Jacobs exclusively played left tackle and received an impressive grade from PFF for his preseason performance. He brings an unmatched potential to the offensive line, especially on the left side, and could become the perfect guy for the job this fall.
He's still young and has a lot of growing to do, but he's already shown he can be productive when given the chance. The Patriots have desperately been trying to figure out a workable offensive line group for the regular season, asking many players to play out of position, which hasn't worked too well.
So, adding a guy like Jacobs with experience in their weakest position is a huge plus.
We'll have to wait and see how it turns out, and it's possible that the other tackle claimed (Zach Thomas) could also be a viable option. Hopefully, these pickups will work out better than anticipated and help make the offensive line less of a liability.
