Patriots roster cuts tracker: Live updates on cut day - Updated 8/27
As the preseason continues and the Patriots prepare to further evaluate the state of their roster, cutdown day is nearing, and Jerod Mayo and Co. will need to make many decisions for the 2024 season.
Fortunately, a newer rule implemented by the NFL allows every team to roster up to 90 players until August 27, when they'll need to finalize their 53-man roster for the season ahead.
This allows a much different approach to evaluating players. In the past, multiple cutdowns required teams to have a maximum number of players rostered, forcing many to be cut well before they could be properly assessed.
The new rule benefits a team like the Patriots, hoping to put together a dramatically improved roster from one year ago, especially offensively. With a new head coach and staff and a rookie quarterback leading the way, it's even more crucial they have the extra allotted time for every player to have a chance to show if they should make the final team.
The hardest decisions will surround the offense, as most of the defensive players from last season remain on the team and are unlikely to be cut.
Because many cuts are bound to happen before the Patriots finalize their roster at the end of the month, we will keep track of every player who is cut between now and then.

After the final preseason game, the Patriots began roster cuts on August 26
Patriots release DT Mike Purcell
After a promising summer to help fill the gap of Christian Barmore's absence, the Patriots shocked fans with the release of defensive tackle Mike Purcell. It's possible he will be back for the practice squad if he remains unsigned.
Patriots trade OLB Matthew Judon
The Patriots traded star pass rusher Matthew Judon to the Falcons.
Patriots release DE John Morgan
To re-sign recently released running back Deshaun Fenwick, the Patriots released defensive end John Morgan.
Patriots release WR JuJu Smith-Schuster
After the first preseason game of the year, the Patriots released veteran receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. He was a controversial addition to the team in 2023 due to the team passing on re-signing Jakobi Meyers and signing the former Steeler. After a lackluster first season in New England, he wasn't able to demonstrate enough to prove he should be on the roster this year.
Whether due to a nagging knee injury that was more bothersome last year than initially reported or the difficulty of properly integrating into the offense, Smith-Schuster is no longer on the team, and the Patriots will focus on the young receiving corps moving forward.
*He has since been signed by the Chiefs as of August 26.
