The new regime in New England worked hard on Tuesday to reduce their roster from 89 players at the end of the preseason to 53, which is the season-allotted number. There weren't too many surprises announced throughout the day, as many of the names who were released were expected, and now the focus shifts to the season ahead.

Who will be named the starting quarterback?

And who will inevitably become the top wide receiver on the depth chart?

Will someone step up and become the team's best pass rusher, with Matthew Judon continuing his career with the Falcons?

Plenty of questions remain to be answered for what should be an exciting rebuilding year, the first season in nearly a quarter century without Bill Belichick on the sideline. The new regime hopes to kick off the new era with a young and determined roster to prove the doubters wrong and build a team that can compete now and in the future.

These players will begin the 2024 season on the physically unable-to-perform list and will have a chance to play when they're healed from their injuries. Once activated, they will have 21 days to return to the 53-man roster.

This will also likely cause a player to be moved to the practice squad or released to make room for the returning player.

Injured reserve:

  • OL Jake Andrews
  • S Marte Mapu (designated to return)
  • DT Armon Watts
  • OL Calvin Anderson

The players placed on injured reserve before the regular season begins are not eligible to return during the year unless they receive a designation to do so. That means they'll have to miss at least four games before returning to the team.

Reserve/NFI:

  • DT Christian Barmore (designated to return)

Update after waiver wire additions:

To make room for the four players the Patriots claimed from the waiver wire, they released WR Jalen Reagor, CB Isaiah Bolden, DT Trysten Hill, and OL Michael Jordan.
