Patriots reuniting with Jimmy Garoppolo just got more realistic

With Josh McDaniels and Dave Ziegler getting fired from the Las Vegas Raiders, the New England Patriots might have an opportunity to reunite with a former Super Bowl champion quarterback. A path back toward relevancy has now become more clear for the New England Patriots. Back in 2022, the Raiders hired Josh McDaniels as their new head coach.

The Raiders instantly became the Patriots of the AFC West. McDaniels and Ziegler seemed to try to re-create the "Patriot Way" in Vegas, but it blew up in their faces. The most puzzling move was replacing Derek Carr with an inferior quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo. This move has proved to be a bad one about halfway through the 2023 NFL Season.

And now with McDaniels and Ziegler out of the picture in LV, the new head coach and general manager of the team may not want to hold onto the former Patriots' QB. Contractually, Garoppolo signed a three-year, $72.75 million contract with the Raiders before the 2023 season began. It was a logical landing spot for Garoppolo, as he became expendable in San Francisco with the emergence of Brock Purdy.

Well, the regime who brought him in is now gone, and it makes sense for the Raiders to cut ties with the QB next offseason. According to overthecap.com, the Raiders could save $13 million against their cap if they cut Garoppolo this coming offseason. They'd have to eat $15.5 million in dead money, but that isn't a large amount for a QB.

When this inevitably happens, the Patriots make a ton of sense to sign Garoppolo. You see, the Pats may not stick with Mac Jones beyond this year and may take a huge swing on a QB. They are currently picking inside the top-10 in the 2024 NFL Draft, and it's hard to find many more wins on this team's schedule.

For that reason, the Pats might be in the perfect position to draft a potential franchise QB. Well, pairing that rookie QB with an experienced veteran like Jimmy Garoppolo makes a ton of sense. Jimmy G has been a backup multiple times before during his NFL career. He was most recently a backup in 2022 with the 49ers. Trey Lance was given the starting job, and Garoppolo was serving as the QB2 until Lance suffered an ankle injury and had to miss the rest of the year.

And given how poorly Garoppolo has played this year, finding a starting job is going to be very challenging in 2024. For that reason, he may need to take a year or two to rebuild his value, and what better place than back with the team that drafted him? Jimmy Garoppolo and a rookie QB draft pick could be a lovely situation for the Patriots.
